Project reflection

Before this project we learned about the body and its functions.  We learned about transplants and cancer and dialysis.  Also we learned about how to prevent cancer and how a cancer will spread.  Lastly we learned about different parts in the body and what they do and cells and what they do and how they work.
The purpose of this project is to educate and show people what I have learned.
The different decisions for the color scheme and the website we used were made as a group.  Although I was the group leader I asked my group what they wanted to do and as I group we made decisions.
I was the group leader I had to lead group discussions and create and do my own project.  I also had to create and refine our website.
I am most proud of successfully organizing a blood drive and for giving blood. I would not change anything; I like it the way it is.  For our next project I will spend more time the big things for my project and less on the little things.  I found relevance in the project because there are so many people who need blood transplants and it’s important to donate if you can.  I will take away how blood is taken, how it is dealt with and how it is used.  Also how many people need it and how to organize a blood drive.

The purpose of this bio blog

The purpose is to educate and show people what I have learned.  Not only that but to have my own place to express myself and be excited about my learning.  This blog is where I debrief and think about my learning at AHS.  I hope you enjoy it.

PANDA BEAR

The panda is born from the mom panda’s stomach.  When the panda is born it is very tiny, 120 grams tiny.  Just like any other animal, the baby needs its mother to take care of it while it’s developing a sense of what the world is like.  Many pandas are in the zoo, but even there they enjoy playing and eating bamboo and also fruits and vegetables, but mostly bamboo.  They love trees as does any bear.  They get to enjoy these things for about 15 years.

Biology

Biology is the science that studies living organisms.

Chimps' fate ignites debate reading

Have you ever stopped to think about who exactly takes credit for the testing of medical substances?  Of course medical researchers make the substances, but who do you think tests them?  Of course not humans, researchers would rather test on animals, or to be specific, chimpanzees.  In Alamogordo, New Mexico, there are about 700 chimps at the National Institutes of Health.  They are used for vaccine testing, like Hepatitis C and HIV.  I think that this is awful.  I don't like the fact that animals sre considered to have less value than humans.  I find this strange because humans sre animals, even though we as humans are a little bit more smarter and more developed socially, so there for we are the highest rated animal, this doesn't meant that we are any better than they are or that our lives have more value than there’s do.  I think that the animals should be taken to San Antonio, Texas, as suggested by Bill Richardson, or at least put into retirement.  They are by far over used and it is rather sad that the NIH would rather continue to abuse the rights of these animals, instead of giving them the respect that they disserve.

Should Fellons Recieve Transplants Reading

Have you ever thought about if you had an organ to give away, who you would want it to go to?  Would you care if it went to an imprisoned felon, or someone who is a large positive part of their community?  This is exactly what we read about in this essay.  After reading this I think that it is strange that we as Americans think that we obtain the power to decide who gets a transplant and who doesn't, or decide who lives and who doesn't.  I think that because this is the way that it is the person's influence on their community and whether or not they have anyone depending on them, are important things to consider.  I also think that one of the most important things to consider is whether or not the transplant will be successful.

Kidney speaker

We recently had a visitor come into our biology class. I thought she was a very interesting because she has 4 kidneys, but only one working one.  I learned that when a kidney is replaced the two original kidneys are not taken out but rather left and the replacements are placed in the front and hooked.  I also learned that steroids, if taken too long can have a negative effect.  She was on steroids in the hospital but wasn't monitored and as an effect of this her hips dissolved so she had to get to hip replacements.  Not only that but I also learned about dialysis and how it works, which scared me but at the same time fascinated me.  The fact that we are advanced that much in medical technology is really cool to me.  It's not only the fact that we know enough to be able to achieve such things as dialysis, but also the fact that so many lives have be saved. I'm really happy she chose to share her story with us and I never will forget her story.

About Me

I am an Animas High School student.  This is my blog for biology class.  I will be blogging about different topics I learn in Biology throughout the year.  I hope you enjoy reading about what I have learned.
